2/27/2007 HECTOR GIMENEZ
Name: Hector Gimenez Position: Catcher Born: 09/28/1982, San Felipe, Venezuela Height: 5-10 Weight: 190 Bats: S T: R
Gimenez experienced one of his hottest winters in 2006, batting .302 with four doubles, three home runs and a .924 OPS in the Venezuelan Winter Leagues. The steadiness of his bat –combined with his know-how behind the plate – makes Gimenez one of the Houston Astros’ top catching prospects.
But earlier this week, the 24-year-old found out his Major League dreams will have to wait a little bit longer. The Astros, who called him up for a pair of games late last season, confirmed for Gimenez that he will need surgery to repair an injury to his right shoulder.
"I'm disappointed, but I know that that's what it has to be, to be healthy again." Gimenez told MLB.com. "That's what I want. Even though I know I'm ready for the surgery, I'm scared, too, because it's the first time that I've had surgery in my career. But I have to do it, and work hard to come back."
Gimenez will undergo surgery in Houston next week and will remain there to rehabilitate his throwing shoulder. He is likely to miss the entire season, but could join one of Houston’s minor league systems within three months to begin throwing again.
Last season, Gimenez batted .273 with 37 RBI and 31 runs while sharing time behind the plate with Humberto Quintero in Round Rock. His consistency at the plate has continued to improve since he first joined the Express (then Double-A) in 2004, hitting .245.
